His reward was the realm of the sea, and so he created every creature that dwelled within it. However, he had a greedy, short-tempered and unpredictable nature. This would often lead him to quarrels with many of the others Gods; Zeus, over the island of Aegina; Dionysus, over the island of Naxos; Helios, the sun god, over the area of Corinth; Hera, wife of Zeus, over Argolis, which got particularly troublesome, with Poseidon claiming the Olympians were biased against him. The most famous quarrel, however, was with Athena. Both desired to be the protector of Acropolis, and Poseidon presented a salt water spring to the people. Athena, however, planted a more useful olive tree, winning the feud. In his anger, he flooded the newly named Athens until his anger subsided. Poseidon owned a golden chariot to transport him, and at his approach any temperamental sea conditions would cease instantly while sea monsters would emerge. He created a magnificent underwater palace of incredible beauty, with white horses in the spacious stables. Despite his wondrous underwater kingdom, Poseidon was never fully satisfied with his share of the world. He even conspired with other Olympians to dethrone Zeus. But his plot was discovered and in punishment Zeus exiled him to earth. There he was to build the walls of Troy for King Laomedon. He was helped by Apollo, who was also banished from Olympus at that time. Poseidon would marry Amphitrite, falling in love with her after seeing her dance with her sisters on the isle of Naxos. At first, she refused his offer of marriage, fleeing to Atlas. Eventually, one of Poseidon’s messengers persuaded her to marry him. She bore him seven children, although he had many affairs with other Goddesses such as Aphrodite. Jealous, Amphitrite punished many of her husband's lovers, just like Hera did to her husband Zeus' women. She was particularly upset with Poseidon's infatuation with Scylla, and was determined to punish her. Amphitrite threw magical herbs into Scylla's bathing pool, and when the woman took her bath, at once she transformed into a barking monster with six heads and twelve feet. War: Poseidon was at the forefront of the war, recognising the coming storm and debating which side to choose. Ultimately, he knew he could never trust his father or the war-loving Ares, nor did he want to desert his wife. So he sided with Zeus. Mortal: The son of Marshall Pardy and Diane McClintock, Ned spent much of his life on the sea, helping his fisherman father. However, pickings were slim, forcing his father to eventually sell his boat and take on a more stable job as a dock worker. Ned excelled in school, earning high marks in biology and physical education particularly. He was an excellent swimmer, feeling at home in the water. He went on to study marine biology, but dropped out before collecting his degree due to a family emergency. His Aunt Helen died in Athens when he was thirty, and to the surprise of everyone, left everything she owned to Ned. He went to Athens to collect the inheritance, and simply never got around to leaving. He enjoyed the atmosphere too much, the feeling of being there. He brought a boat, and now works as both a fisherman and a diver. He also does work for the local aquarium, turning over some of his more unique finds to them. | |||||||||
